Basically, reverse osmosis water filtration systems work on a very simple principle – they use pressure to move the solution (in this case, contaminated water) through a semi-permeable membrane. In this way, contaminants are left behind the membrane and contaminant-free water is produced on the other side.
In theory, this sounds great. But if you think about it a bit, they can actually only remove what is heavier than water. The problem is that some chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides are lighter than water, so they pass through the membrane and end up in purified water. On the other hand, some of the ingredients we want to retain, such as salt and some of the minerals our bodies need, are removed. This is why this type of filter does not work well for drinking water production.
Another major reason that makes these systems unsuitable for home use is that they waste a lot of water due to their low back pressure. They can only recover 15% of the water that enters the system and the rest is discharged as wastewater. Industrial plants have methods of recovering this water that can achieve efficiencies close to 50%, but these methods are not suitable for domestic installations.
Moreover, no matter how wealthy you are, you will be surprised by the cost. The average reverse osmosis system can cost around $10,000 and, as we’ve seen, does almost none of the work it’s supposed to do. For home use, there are cheaper and more efficient alternatives, such as carbon filters.
The truth is that reverse osmosis systems are designed for industrial use. They are used in desalination plants, for wastewater treatment and in reef aquariums. In the food industry, they save a lot of money when they are used to produce concentrated juices and milk powder instead of the traditional heat treatment process. In car washes they are highly valued as they produce water with low salt content, which is a favorite for car paints.
